McAfee VirusScan Enterprise v8.0
Problem Description:
There is a conflict between McAfee VirusScan Enterprise v8.0 and Wave Document Manager that causes Windows to crash and shutdown. According to the McAfee service portal: "a defect in Buffer Overflow Protection prevents the system from fully restarting if Buffer Overflow Protection is enabled on a system which has EMBASSY Trust Suite installed".
To correct this issue, you will need to download and install Patch 14 (*see note below) from McAfee. Click HERE to go to the McAfee website knowlegebase article to read more about this issue and learn how to download the patch.
This issue has been seen in the past with certain McAfee products and McAfee corrected that issue (case # 821600 with McAfee Managed VirusScan v3.0).
Alternatively, you may prevent this issue by turning off Buffer Overflow protection in McAfee.
Below are the steps to follow to configure McAfee to operate on a platform along with Wave Systems Corp. Document Manager. Chose the situation below that matches your current state.
Solution:
If the user has not installed both McAfee & DocManager or McAfee is installed and you want to install DocManager:
- Install McAfee first
- Turn off Buffer Overflow Protection (see instructions below)
- Install DocManager (ETS)
- Reboot
If DocManager is already installed and you want to install McAfee:
- Uninstall DocManager. You can uninstall all of ETS or just Document Manager; it may be easier for most users to remove the entire package.
- Reboot
- Install McAfee
- Turn off Buffer Overflow Protection (see instructions below)
- Reinstall DocManager (or the entire package).
- Reboot
If the user has installed both McAfee & DocManager:
- Boot the machine into safe mode
- Turn off Buffer Overflow Protection (see instructions below)
- Reboot
Turn off Buffer Overflow Protection in McAfee VirusScan Enterprise v8.0.
Please note that these steps will work in Safe Mode.
- Boot into Safe Mode if the machine is already in a bad state (F8 during boot)
- Launch VirusScan from the Start Menu, Start > All Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console.
- Right click on the 'Buffer Overflow Protection' option and select 'disable' menu to disable the option.
* McAfee now has a new cumulative patch out which replaces Patch 11, called Patch 14. Because of this we are now recommending users install patch 14 from McAfee to address this conflict. Please note that Patch 11 will still address the conflict problem with McAfee but patch 14 includes other important updates from McAfee.
Please note: In some cases where McAfee products and ETS are installed on the same system, ETS and McAfee can interfere with each other, causing various errors. If you have both ETS and McAfee installed, and are getting unexpected behavior from either program, we strongly suggest that you obtain the latest patch from McAfee as well as the latest version of ETS.
