7.4.2 Steps for Restoring or Transferring Select Keys
to a different PC
This scenario assumes 2 PCs with fully functional TPMs and Key Transfer Manager Software installations. It further assumes the TPMs and associated software are compatible.
There are two methods for selecting which keys are to be restored or transferred:
a. On the (archive) source PC, first create a new archive location. Then from the Key Transfer Manager icon in the system tray, right-click to bring up the menu, then select Advanced. Select the Local Keys tab; individually select the specific keys for archive that will be restored to the destination PC. Click Archive for each key. Close the Advanced screen.
b. On the (archive) source PC, from the Key Transfer Manager icon in the system tray, right-click to bring up the menu, then select Archive TPM Keys. Informational messages appear above the Key Transfer Manager icon in the system tray as each key is processed. A final message about the total number of keys stored is displayed upon completion of the overall archive process. The TPM keys have now been backed to the archive file.
On the destination PC, From the Key Transfer Manager icon in the system tray, right-click to bring up the menu, then select Settings. From the Settings tab, select the archive from which you want to restore or transfer. (Note: the selected archive could be on the source PC if network file access is available. If not, then it should point to a floppy disk remove media, CD or other which contains the archive from the source PC.) Close the Settings screen.
There are two methods for restoring or transferring the keys on the destination PC; the method you choose here depends on which method you used in step 1 above:
a. If you used option 1.a: On the destination PC, from the Key Transfer Manager icon in the system tray, right-click to bring up the menu, and then select Restore TPM Keys. You will be prompted for the key archive password. Once you have successfully entered the password, the restoration process begins. Informational messages appear above the Key Transfer Manager icon in the system tray as each key is processed. A final message about the total number of keys restored is displayed upon completion of the overall restoration process. The keys have now been restored (or transferred) to the TPM.
b. If you used option 1.b: On the destination PC, from the Key Transfer Manager icon in the system tray, right-click to bring up the menu, then select Advanced. Select the Archived Keys tab. Individually select specific keys to be restored. Click Restore for each key desired. You will be prompted for the key archive password. Once you have successfully entered the password, the restoration process begins. The selected keys previously archived by Key Transfer Manager on the source PC have now been restored (transferred) to the destination PC.
